Into the depths of the Himalayas

Nepal, October 2024 · film by Philippe Nostrenoff · photos on Kodak film

The Himalayas are a magical region. Religion, beliefs and legends are everywhere.

A vast expanse of nature, home to the world’s highest mountains, with isolated and remote places.

Without a doubt, these are the trips that have left the deepest impression on me. I was fortunate enough to discover the beauty of this region for the first time a long time ago… when I was 11 years old. Since that day, I hadn’t returned, and I missed this place terribly.

I filled this void with documentaries, exhibitions, films and books about this part of the world that has always fascinated me. By the way, you should watch Seven Years in Tibet by Jean-Jacques Annaud, or La Panthère des neiges by Sylvain Tesson and Vincent Munier.

I had the opportunity to return years later, in October 2024. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, it felt a bit like coming home. I went there for a 12-day trek in the heart of this magical region, with a summit at 5,106 m.

The film above was made by Philippe Nostrenoff, who was part of the same group. It perfectly captures the beauty we were confronted with for nearly two weeks.

As soon as I walked through the streets of Kathmandu, I felt a certain excitement: it was as if everything that had inspired me for years was coming to life right in front of me.

I grabbed my Kodak to capture these moments, but sadly there were only 8 shots left on the film. As usual, I had packed my bag too quickly.
